Ergaki
Ergaki is a beautiful place in the Eastern Siberia, situated approximately
half way between Abakan, the capital of Khakasia, and Kizil, the capital
of Tuva.
Ergaki is a paradise for travellers: magnificent lakes, crystal clear rivers, rich Siberian taiga, wonderful granite peaks. The Ergaki mountain mass is situated in the central part of the Western Sayan chain. Ergaki stretch from west to east for eighty kilometres, from north to south for seventy kilometres. The mountains consist of several ranges: Ergaki, Metougoul-Taiga, Baldyr-Taiga, Shepshir-Taiga. The landscape is considerably indented by the ancient glaciers, has a dense system of rivers and streams, a number of bigger beautiful lakes.
The territory is characterised by East Siberian type of climate with a
long severe winter ( average temperature in January 28-35°C). Summers
are usually mild (average temperatures in July in the day time 10-16°C,
at night 2-4°C). Average number of rainy and snowy days 5-8 per month,
in summer with frequent thunderstorms.
Practically all the summits of the region ( the highest altitude 2281 metre) have complicated steep slopes up to 550 metres high. The region has been explored by the mountaineers of Krasnoyarsk since 1994. In 1995, 1996 this place was chosen as a site for holding regional championships in mountaineering (class of rock climbing ) and in 1997, 1998 - championships of Siberia and the Far East.
